Lou Espindola

In 1980, Lou
Espindola was on of the original founders of the Brotherhood of
Mexican American Police Officers of Phoenix, Arizona. Later, Lou
along with the other members decided to become part of the
National Latino Peace Officers Association. Being part of
N.L.P.O.A. gave the Phoenix Latino Officer's “National Voice”
which helped Lou resolve many disputes between Latino Officer's
and police agencies. Unlike California, Arizona doesn't have
police unions to represent their officer's, which makes
N.L.P.O.A. a very important part of the Latino Community. Lou
has served as a Chapter President, a State President, and as the
National Vice President from 1998 -2000. |

member of the NLPOA Alameda County Chapter, California and has
been an NLPOA member for over 30 years. Steve has committed his
personal time and personal resources as a local board member, a
Chapter President, as the NLPOA California State President, and
as the National NLPOA Parliamentarian. Steve retired after
serving 30 years as a Law Enforcement Officer in the Oakland
area. Department in the world and supervises more than 13,000
sworn and civilian personnel. He is an Adjunct Professor of
Public Administration at the University of La Verne. |

Gordon Clausen
started working with the San Diego Police Department in 1963 and
continued for more than 30 years. Gordon worked in all areas
specifically as a narcotics detective. Gordon was a member of
“La Placa Social” the original NLPOA chapter name. Gordon served
in several chapter board positions and kept the chapter running
with his personal finances and energy for more than 20 years.

Barbara Ponze, Deputy

Barbara was one of
the first females to get hired with the Santa Clara County
Sheriff’s Office, California in 1960’s. Barbara was selected to
receive the 1997 NLPOA Law Enforcement Leadership Award for her
Commitment to Excellence in Policing. Barbara Ponze joined the
Santa Clara Sheriff’s Department on January 10, 1966. The Latino
Peace Officers’ El Puente Newsletter was developed in 1975 by
Barbara Ponze, Rosa Maria Hernandez, Vicente Calderon, and Fred
Caballero. Barbara Ponze served as the National NLPOA Editor on
several occasions. In 1987, Barbara Ponze was elected president
of the NLPOA Santa Clara County Chapter. Barbara Ponze became
the first female in the organization to head an N.L.P.O.A.
Chapter. Barbara Ponze has exemplified excellent organization

On August 7,
1974, the Articles of Incorporation of the Latino Peace

the risk of eliciting negative comments from their fellow
officers and their departments. Their unselfish and unrelenting
commitment to the goals of recruitment, hiring, training,
retention and promotion of qualified Hispanics into the field of
law enforcement, has been an inspiration to other officers who
have continued to work towards these goals. John is currently
working for California Corrections Peace Officers Association.

On August 7, 1974,
the Articles of Incorporation of the Latino Peace Officers’
Association of California were filed in the Office of the
